These photos were taken from the PAA National Basketball Finals this weekend. Avon and Somerset Constabulary reached the final for the first time, unfortunately losing to Police Scotland Strathclyde.

The second photo is the coach of the team, Jon DEANE (retired DI) receiving the Fair Play Trophy. Again this is the first time our force has received such an award at the finals.

The last photo is of PC Steve WHITE. 5 players from the entire tournament were selected for the All Star Team. Steve was playing at his first finals and was selected into the All Star Team.

The Constabulary Basketball Club is a long standing sporting section of the Force Club and is made up of police officers and police staff along with a few other members who are friends and family of our players.

Our club has been playing in local competitive leagues since the 1980’s, as part of WEBBA (West of England Basketball Association) and we also compete in the annual PSUK (Police Sport UK) Basketball Championships.

We train on Wednesday evenings between 19:30 and 22:00 at Police HQ in the Sports Hall.

Our competitive fixtures start in late September and run through until mid-May every year and we play games across the region from including many locations in Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire areas.  Over the years we’ve competed well in competitions locally, winning local league divisions, reaching the latter stages of knockout competitions, including finishing 5th in the 2011 PSUK Championships and losing in the quarter-finals in the 2016 Championship to the eventual runners up.

Basketball is a team sport and while you can only have 5 players on the court at one time, we need a big squad of players to ensure that we have sufficient numbers to compete in each and every game. The club has 14 players registered and this is not enough to be as competitive as we would like to be because shift patterns, family commitments and the odd injury here and there meaning that our number of available players fluctuates from game to game.

We are not looking for Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant or Lebron James calibre players (although it would be advantageous!) but if you have an interest in the sport, whether you have played recreationally or competitively at some point or even if you have never played and want to learn in friendly and welcoming environment…. We would welcome your interest by speaking to our club officials.
